Quick Creative Play Exercise: Photo Styling

A quick, creative play exercise I love doing for fun is photo styling. Since we pretty much all have camera phones by now, photo styling on the fly is an excellent way to hone in your styling skills. The challenge can be as simple as keeping an eye out for visually interesting props and backgrounds. During a staycation in Venice, the Airbnb had the BEST light and props (aka their furnishings). It made for a perfect content shoot. I had just gone to Rainbow Farms, a fantastic grocery store in Venice filled with organic fruits, snacks, and so much more. Since I was obsessed with the tables, I used shredded coconut and created this pattern. The patina of the table, coupled with the coconut, pops against the dark greys.

As for the other image, I decided to stack bowls to allow from some height in the frame. This helped the marigolds to feel less intense and compliment the reddish passionfruit. Both colors bring the eye center, which helps to keep the raw bars centerstage. This creative play exercise took about 30 minutes and didn't require some big to do. Instead, I just allowed myself to have some fun. If you are interested in photography, challenge yourself to see how you can squeeze in a little creative play throughout your day.
