3 things I discovered by saying YES to a reiki workshop on a whim

On a whim, I decided to join my new friends for a reiki attunement certification workshop. I was just starting to dip my toe into the spiritual waters and thought, Why not? Maybe I was channeling Shonda Rhimes? I didn't know much about reiki other than my mom tried it and said it worked. Shocking as she wasn't one for the spiritual brouhaha. So I jumped in headfirst into the deep end of the reiki pool.

What I didn't expect was the chain of events that would happen during the workshop and after. There's always rumbling in the spiritual community that your old life tends to fade away once you take a healer's path. Well, that isn't a myth. That shit is real. Quickly I saw the changes. My diet, my relationship with alcohol changed. Instead, my new self was more interested in meditation, kundalini, and chatting Wahe GuruHey, it's a good jam. All good things, but with the journey came with a hard pill to swallow. Again, the healer's path isn't all clouds and zen. It's more like your peloton falling on you before you begin your work. Ouch.

So what are the three things I discovered during my level one Usui attunement?

  1. We all have healing energy pumping through our bodies. Life force energy, light, chi, whatever you'd like to call it, is real, and it's our fuel that gives us life. The dips in our life force come with the daily grind. You know it better as stress. We have ups and downs. Some big like trauma and heartbreak. Reiki helps to balance the energy through the body and give TLC to the areas that need it most. I like to say; it's a hug for your heart and bath for your brain. By reducing stress, the body is allowed to rejuvenate. Meaning that you are better equip to handle that troll on your zoom call without losing your shit. Yay, reiki!

  2. Self-healing is the most important work we can do. My reiki journey opened my eyes wide, and I got to see what was missing in my life AND where I wasn't showing up for myself + others. Being of service to your fellow human beings and planet requires that you let go of your baggage. You can't hold space if you're gripping to your Tumis. Becoming attuned in reiki rapidly revealed where I needed to clean my side of the street. As the saying goes, No Mud, No Lotus. The process wasn't overnight but kickstarted me to start cleaning. TMI, but the funny thing was is, I felt as if the Divine was flicking off low vibe people from my life as if they were boogers. Gross, but you get the picture. By healing yourself, you can hold space for others, and it tips the collective's frequency into a higher vibration. Yes, you, as an individual, are that powerful. Don't believe me? 3. Magic is real. That may sound whack-a-doodle, but I felt and saw the magic we all carry within us that day. From practicing reiki with my fellow students, I could feel the light was pumping through my body. Add in the attunement from my teacher, and WOWZERS, I dare you to say it's not real. I left that workshop walking on sunshine with a new respect for the spiritual side of life and the body.

To think I almost missed out on such an exciting and life-changing opportunity spurs me to say yes to more of the things I'm curious about in life. The personal growth I have experienced might have taken me years if I didn't go for it. Plus, that alone solidifies my faith in this healing modality. I loved it so much that my reiki attunement didn't stop there. I continued and became attuned in Jikiden Reiki (Eastern Reiki) and Sekehem or Seichim Reiki, in addition to Usui I learned that weekend. I'm an official practitioner. My reiki practice starts with me and, on occasion, shared with clients, friends, my fur kids, and family. What I hope you receive from this post is going for what lights you up, what you are curious about, is the real deal of living. Pull the thread on life and see what happens. Kick boring to the curb. All I can say is I'm genuinely thankful for the ride of this life, even the bumps that came along with it.
