For the LOVE of Art: David Chung & Desiree Fessler

A couple years ago, I ventured out solo for some gallery hoping and landed at WWA Gallery located in the heart of Downtown Culver City. Little did I know that I would be sucked into the world of THE CHUNG. The bright colors and the humor sold me immediately. Close friends know this already but I kind of have an obsession with collecting art. Maybe that's why Sam and I click so well; he overlooks my art habit and I bypass his shoe collection. Anyways, now that I was hooked on WWA Gallery's newsletters, I found another artist in the mix that I adored: Desiree Fessler. Not aware at this time that David and Desiree are the art world's funniest couple; a real modern day Lucy & Ricky. Next thing I knew I was following these two funsters on Facebook. Needless to say, I had to share with you one of the most entertaining Q&As we've done. Get ready to be entertained and blown over by two of the nicest, most talented artists in Los Angeles. May I introduce you to Desiree Fessler and David Chung...

David, tell us about Desiree.

She's okay I suppose. I mean she can be a total jerk sometimes, but I didn't marry her for her personality. She actually told me she was rich...but that ended up being a lie. So I guess that makes her a lying jerk. But at least she's nice to look at. Also bewbs.

Desiree, tell us about David.

He's a cool guy! At least that's what he tells me everyday while he is putting on his sunglasses.

Everyone starts somewhere, what was your first job like?

David: my first job was at a Subway where I made people eat fresh...as I watched.

Desiree: I stuffed animals with love and cotton filling for children. I cried myself to sleep at night during this time. It was a dark period of my life... Oh I forgot to mention It was at Build-A-Bear.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why?

David: I'd totally collaborate with Hugh Hefner. Me and Hef would work together to make it rain on all the playboy bunnies from a helicopter!

Desiree: That's so gross Dave! Quit being such a perv. If I could collaborate with someone it would have to be with a respectable organization... like Thunder From Down Under.

David: sigh...fine. Then I'm going with my second choice, Enterprise Rent-a-car. Because I hear they have an excellent corporate structure and they give you the tools to be your own boss.

Since we're all Angelenos, do you have a preference: East side or West side? Why?

David: what the hell is an "Angelenos"?

Desiree: I think it's an Italian restaurant.

David: oh, then I prefer the one by the LAX.

Favorite LA hangout

David: I really enjoy going down to the Natural History Museum to see all the dinosaurs, then quote lines from Jurassic Park to all the museum patrons.

Desiree: I actually spend Mondays and Wednesdays in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood dressed up as the Invisible Woman from fantastic 4. Don't be surprised if you can't find me, my costume is really good!

Favorite Gallery

David: I'd have to go with the WWA Gallery in Culver City. I've been working with those guys for several years now and they're just really good and fun people who always treat their artists right. Also they have a high tolerance for my behavior.

Desiree: My favorite gallery to visit would have to be the Merry Karnowsky Gallery because some of my favorite artists show there. My favorite gallery that I have worked with would be WWA Gallery. I love that gallery and they treat their artists really well. Plus Honey Kettle Chicken is just three doors down!

Do you listen to music while you create? If so, what's your jam?

David: actually I prefer having movies or shows playing while I paint more than listening to music. Not only do they help me gauge how long I've been painting for, they make me feel like I'm being more productive. However, when I do listen to music, my jam is 2 chainz "birthday song". 2 chainz is a lyrical genius. I mean how does he come up with this shit up in the studio??

Desiree: I listen to all different kinds of music from Indie Rock to Rap, pretty much anything except country music which gives me diarrhea. I think it's some sort of rare allergic reaction. My current jam would have to be "gin & juice" by Snoop Dogg. I'm also really loving Aloe Blacc right now.

What is it like working with each other? (Noticed you did a collaborative piece together)

Working together is pretty easy and we're able to take each others critiques quite well. Plus we kind of like each other, so that's a bonus.

Tell us about your last adventure with each other?

Our last adventure was in Kauai where we just went to different parts of the island eating food then finding the nearest beach to pass out on from a food induced coma.

Last concert together?

Flight of the Conchords!!
